England Marketing is a woman-owned company, with our team being made up of majority women. Working in an office of mostly women can often be intense, but it is hands down one of the most supportive and understanding environments to find yourself working in. Every day we listen and learn from each other.
This International Women's Day, we wanted to share with you the women who inspire us.
Rachel Carson, Marine biologist, conservationist and author.
Rachel Carson's works 'The Sense of Wonder' and 'Silent Spring' paved the way for modern-day environmentalists and was one of the first to encourage a harmonious, dual-existence with nature.
For many people today, Rachel is a symbol of both compassion and intelligence and her challenges with the government and agricultural scientists of the time changed how institutions viewed the natural world for good. She was truly a trailblazer for sustainable living and environmental consciousness. We have completed numerous research projects to date which are focused on biodiversity and sustainable agricultural practices and when we do, we channel Rachel Carson!
Hannah Jackson: 'The Red Shepherdess', Farmer and author.
We love Hannah's story... how she wasn’t from an agricultural background but persisted in doing what she loved in a very male-heavy industry. She also preaches work-life balance and makes sure to do non-farming things to look after her mental health!
As mental health within the agricultural industry is some of the worst nationally, having a woman at the forefront of the campaign for better mental health practices is admirable. Hannah is also a brilliant example for young people that you don't have to be from a farming family to pursue a career in the industry.
Dolly Parton, singer, songwriter and philanthropist.
Despite having an incredibly poor upbringing, Dolly Parton has created what can only be described as an empire. She is quite literally the definition of self-made.
Whilst Dolly is best known for her musical talents, her most inspiring attribute to us is her generosity. She has donated millions of dollars to various charities and programmes; arguably most notably a $1M donation to COVID-19 vaccine research! Here at England Marketing we also think that charitable giving is crucial, which is why we have a new charity partner... keep an eye on our socials to find out who!
Beth Hart, chief sustainability and impact officer at McDonald's.
We admire Beth because she talks sense in a world of chaos. This (as well as her driven mindset and industry expertise) is why she has risen through the ranks. Much to our MD's delight, she is all a University of Reading Alumni!
Beth also preaches the importance of high standards, hard work and self-confidence, which parallel the values that we also hold here at England Marketing.
Esther Boserup, economist and agricultural scientist.
A truly inspirational woman, whose incredible quote, ‘necessity is the northern of all invention’ captured our Director Clare when she was doing her GCSEs!
In the realm of farming and sustainable development, her ground-breaking work challenged conventional notions about agriculture and gender roles, earning her global recognition and admiration.
Boserup's seminal work, "The Conditions of Agricultural Growth: The Economics of Agrarian Change under Population Pressure," revolutionized the understanding of agricultural development. She argued that population pressure is a significant driver of agricultural innovation and change, contradicting Malthusian pessimism by suggesting that human ingenuity can overcome resource constraints.
Her insights into the role of women in agriculture were ahead of her time. She highlighted the vital contributions of women to farming, challenging the prevailing narrative that marginalized their roles. Her work emphasised the importance of recognising and empowering women in agricultural production—a perspective now widely accepted and one we should continue to push!
All of these women inspire us, as do many more. We learn from their aspirational lives and strive to be the best versions of ourselves by using their success as our motivation!
